T. 12--O Mistress Mine

In my tenth grade beginning acting class with Dawn Gunderson, we had an assignment to perform a monologue in front of the class. I had gone with my family to the Shakespearian Festival at Southern Utah University a few months previous to this. There, we saw a wonderful performance of “Twelfth Night.” I enjoyed that play immensely, particularly its use of music. With Mrs. Gunderson’s approval, I decided to perform two of the three songs in the play, using original music as a setting for the words (As mentioned before, I took advantage of several opportunities to compose and present my compositions in high school). For this song, and for “The Rain Raineth,” I tried to create a melody that could stand on its own without accompaniment and that sounded convincingly like a tune from Shakespeare’s day.
