BYU & Beyond: 2012-2015

After my mission, I knew I wanted to keep music in my life. I decided it would be best to pursue a music minor instead of a music major. In the minor, I could still learn about music theory, performance, and writing, but it wouldn’t be so intensive that I would stop enjoying it. I also looked for opportunities to create and showcase my new musical works. I entered contests, recorded personal projects, and wrote lots of a cappella arrangements for groups in the BYU A Cappella Club. This was a time of expanding opportunities as I dabbled in new genres and composition methods. I still used Finale for most of my compositions and arrangements, but these four years saw a good amount of recorded work. My recording and mixing skills are quite limited, but it was a lot fun to see what I could do.

I am not sure what my musical future is. The idea of being a paid performer, composer, or “youtuber” sounds exciting, and I suppose I could do those things if I really invested my time and resources to that end. But, I no longer have the desire to pursue such a career. If I make a little money from any of my works, that would be wonderful. I would love to see my best works see some exposure. But I have lots of other interests, too. Besides, after becoming more informed of the nature of the music industry, and I am not willing to focus towards a music career in favor of my current pursuits. I will continue to find opportunities to write, to perform, to entertain, and to inspire with my musical talents.

As I continue to live my life, I know many other moments of inspiration will come to me, and I will express them in my own music and in my own words. My family and friends will be aware of my creative talent, and if my talents and abilities help to make the world a little more delightful and good for those I care about, that would satisfy me.
