This is another tune I decided to use as a theme for my Bot Island stories. In this case, the story (“Botoran 101”) is about Phantom (a black-cloaked, sickle-weilding, but benevolent magic user) and his quest to join the noble ranks of the Botoran, a group of warriors who fight for justice in our galaxy (not unlike what the Jedi do in another galaxy far, far away). I have a funny story about this piece. I wrote this piece on notebook paper during some study time in a freshman class in high school. Because I didn’t have a keyboard handy, I tried to determine the pitches I heard in my head by quietly humming them. Though I tried hard not to disturb my classmates, my humming did not go unnoticed. I remember being given a note by the girls who sat next to me in class. The note said in essence, “That is a nice song you’re singing, but we’d like you to be quiet about it.” I got the message, and remained silent for the remainder of class. I guess I just needed the patience to wait until I got home to figure out the pitches. When I played this piece on a keyboard I usually used a synth sound, but I think this piece sounds good as a bassoon and cello duet (it doesn’t matter to me which instrument plays which part because I think it would sound good both ways).
